Solar Panel Cleaning in Fort Worth
Cedar pollen blows up from the Hill Country from mid-December through February. Oak takes over in March and April. Then the summer haze bakes what's left into a film that rain doesn't lift. You won't notice it from the driveway. You'll notice it in your monitoring app, as a clear-day peak that keeps sliding under last year's.
How we do it
We clean panels with pure water and a soft brush, never a pressure washer. Fort Worth water is treated surface water and it's hard, roughly 6 to 10 grains a gallon, so it flashes dry into a mineral haze on hot glass before you can wipe it. We run ours through a deionizing resin bed until it reads near zero TDS. That rinses off and dries clear.
The brush is a soft monofilament head on a carbon fiber water-fed pole. It reaches most one and two story arrays from the ground. Where an array sits too far back from the eave to reach, we work off the roof surface. Nobody stands on your modules, and no ladder leans on the frames.
Hardened bird droppings get soaked and left to dwell, then brushed off. Never scraped. The anti-reflective coating on the cover glass is about a hundred nanometers of porous silica, well under a thousandth of a millimeter, and a scrub pad takes it off for good. Where there's a greasy film we use a pH-neutral surfactant. No ammonia, no alkaline degreaser, no solvent.
We work early morning or at dusk. A module on a Fort Worth roof in July can run north of 150 degrees, and module makers' own cleaning instructions say to wash when the glass is cool. Cold water on glass that hot is a thermal shock risk, and it flash-dries into spotting before you can rinse it off.
Then we clear the gap between the panels and the shingles, where oak catkins and cedar debris pack in. And we look the array over while we're up there. MC4 connectors, conduit straps, critter guard, hail pocks, snail trails, any browning in the laminate. We look and we photograph. We don't touch wiring.
The visit, step by step

Set the baseline from your own production data
Before anything gets wet, we pull up your Enphase, SolarEdge or Tesla app and note the clear-day peak against the same month last year. That's the number the wash gets judged on.

Inspect the array and time the visit
We check for cracked glass, chewed wiring, hail marks, loose critter guard and nesting in the gap under the modules. Then we book the wash for early morning or evening, while the glass is cool. Module makers' cleaning instructions say the same thing.

Wash with deionized water and a soft brush
Near zero TDS water through a water-fed pole with a soft monofilament head, panel by panel, top edge down. The bottom band gets rinsed last, so silt goes over the frame instead of settling against it. No pressure washer, no abrasives, no ladder leaned on the frames, no boots on the modules.

Clear under and below the array
We pull leaves, oak catkins and nest material out of the four to six inch gap between the panels and the shingles, clear the gutter run below so it drains, and reseat critter guard mesh where squirrels or grackles have worked it loose.

Written flags while your warranties are still live
You get a written note on anything we saw on the array, which matters while your module and workmanship warranties are still running. Before and after photos with it. A week later, compare your clear-day peak to the baseline.
Why it matters here
Soiling doesn't cost you output evenly. The cells in a panel are wired in series, so the dirtiest cell throttles the current for every cell on its substring. When the mismatch gets big enough, a bypass diode shunts around that substring entirely. One solid bird dropping can cost you the substring it's sitting on, roughly a third of a conventional 60-cell module, about half that on the half-cut designs standard on newer installs.
The more expensive case is the one the diode doesn't catch. A pollen film or a thin smear holds one cell below its neighbors without the mismatch ever getting big enough to trip the diode. That cell gets driven into reverse bias and works like a resistor, turning the string's current into heat. That's a hot spot. Enough Texas summers of it cooks the encapsulant and scorches the backsheet, and that's damage, not just a lower number in the app.
Then there's the roof under the array, which is the part of your roof nobody looks at. Leaves and nest material pack into the four to six inch gap between the modules and the shingles and stay damp up there, and damp shade on a shingle is how a roof starts streaking black. Nothing rinses it out from above and you can't see it from the ground. Clearing it is part of the wash.
Signs it's time
- ✦Your clear-day peak in the monitoring app is down on the same week last year, with no new shade or equipment fault to explain it.
- ✦A yellow-green pollen film across the glass in March and April, or a chalky grey haze you can see from the driveway when the sun is low.
- ✦White bird droppings sitting on the modules, or grackles and pigeons going in and out of the gap under the array.
- ✦A dark band of dirt along the bottom edge of every panel, where the aluminum frame stands a few millimeters proud of the glass and holds water.

Questions
Doesn't the rain clean them?
It knocks loose dust off a tilted array and that's about it. Rain doesn't lift pollen film, hardened droppings, or the mineral spotting left behind by a garden hose, and Fort Worth gets long dry stretches in July and August where nothing rinses at all. After a storm the middle of the glass comes up cleaner and the bottom band stays, because that's the low edge where the frame holds water and silt.
How often do solar panels need cleaning in Fort Worth?
Once a year covers most roofs here, timed for after oak pollen finishes in late spring. Cedar is a winter problem, mid-December through February, so it's long done by then. Twice makes sense if you're under trees, near an active build site out toward Aledo or west Fort Worth where concrete dust is in the air, or if birds are nesting under the array. Can cleaning damage the panels or void my warranty?
It can, done wrong. High pressure can force water past the seal at the edge of the laminate, where the glass, cells and backsheet are bonded together, and moisture in there means delamination and corrosion later. Scrub pads and abrasive powders strip the anti-reflective coating, and that doesn't come back. Walking on modules is the quiet one, because the cell cracks it causes stay invisible until your output drops. We don't do any of the three. Module makers spell out low pressure and non-abrasive cleaning in their own maintenance instructions, but the terms differ by manufacturer, so read yours.
How much production will I actually get back?
That depends entirely on how dirty they were, so anyone quoting you a fixed percentage is guessing. Published soiling losses run a few percent a year in wet climates and considerably more where dust sits on the glass between rains. Your own app settles it: note the clear-day peak before we come, check it a week after, and you'll have a real number for your roof.
