Gutter Cleaning in Fort Worth

Fort Worth gutters fill twice a year, and one of those times catches people out. Live oaks hold last year's leaves through winter, then dump them with their catkins in March and April, months after everyone has put the ladder away. Cedar elm, post oak, and pecan finish the job in November. Miss either one and the first real storm sends a few hundred gallons over the front lip and straight down the foundation wall.

How we do it

Gutters get hand-cleared, not blown out. Every foot of trough, worked from a ladder set on a standoff so the rails never rest on the gutter lip and dent it. Debris goes into a bucket and leaves with us, not onto the roof and down into your beds or the pool. The part that actually stops an overflow is the downspouts, and that's most of the visit. A trough packed with leaves is easy to see and easy to fix. The plug that sends water over the front lip is usually sitting in the outlet or the first elbow, out of sight, and it only shows itself when you put water through the run and watch what comes out the bottom.

The visit, step by step

  1. 1

Read the roofline from the ground first

Gutter size and profile, 5-inch K-style with 2x3 downspouts on most production builds, 6-inch with 3x4 on larger custom homes. Downspout count and where each one discharges. Sags, separated miters, and any run already holding water.

  2. 2

Clear the troughs by hand, valleys first

A valley funnels a big share of the roof into one short stretch of gutter, so that's where the compacted mat sits and that's where we start. Then the rest of the run, foot by foot, down to bare metal.

  3. 3

Flush every downspout and watch the bottom

Hose from the top, eyes on the discharge at the bottom. A slow or dirty flow means the outlet or the first elbow is packed, and it gets snaked until it runs clean. Where downspouts tie into buried drain lines, common on Keller and Southlake lots, we confirm water reaching the pop-up emitter out in the yard. A silted 4-inch line looks perfect from the roof and backs the whole run up.

  4. 4

    Check pitch, hangers, and seams

Standing water after a flush usually means the run has lost its fall, or more often that it's sagged between two hangers. Proper fall is about a quarter inch per ten feet toward the outlet. Miters and end caps get checked for leaks while the water's still running.

  5. 5

Rinse the splash off and photograph what we found

Gutter faces wiped, splash rinsed off the walk and the brick. Photos of each elevation before and after, plus a written note on anything found: granule load, soft fascia, a separated corner.

Why it matters here

Most of this area sits on expansive clay. It swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's not, and what cracks a slab isn't water, it's uneven water. A blocked downspout dumps its whole share of the roof at one corner of the house while the rest of the perimeter bakes through August. That corner heaves, the far side drops, and that's how doors stick, how mortar joints step-crack, and how a slab ends up on piers. Overflow also runs behind the gutter and wicks into the fascia, which on Fort Worth builds from the 90s and 2000s is often primed pine, and soft fascia is how squirrels and wasps get into a soffit. A flat section holding water through a hot week in July is a Culex nursery too, and Culex is the mosquito Tarrant County traps for West Nile. Foundation work runs into the thousands. This visit is $150 to $325.

Signs it's time

  • Water sheets over the front lip of the gutter during a storm instead of running to the corner. That's a plugged outlet, not a full gutter.
  • Tap a downspout at chest height. A hollow ring means it's clear. A dull thud means it's packed solid.
  • There's a splash trench cut into the mulch under one section of gutter, and mud spatter up the brick to about knee height.
  • The fascia board right behind the gutter is dark, soft, or the paint is peeling in one spot while the rest of the run looks fine.
  • Coarse grit like sand, the color of your shingles, piled at the base of the downspout or on the splash block. Those are granules off the roof, and a heavy load says the shingles are shedding.

What it costs

One-time gutter cleaning runs $150 to $325. Most single-story homes price at $200. Simple roofline and four downspouts sits at the bottom of that range. Two-story with valleys, long runs, and buried drain lines sits at the top. On The Homestead Plan, gutters are on the calendar twice, in April and again in November, at no extra charge.

Questions

How often do gutters actually need cleaning in Fort Worth?

Twice a year, spring and fall, which is the standard advice. What's different here is the timing. Live oaks hold last year's leaves through winter, then drop them and their catkins in March and April. Cedar elm, post oak, and pecan come down in November. If you can see tassels hanging over the gutter lip from the driveway in April, it's already full. A pecan directly over the roof, or a hail storm, can justify a third pass, because hail strips leaves and shingle granules into the trough at once.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to do this again?

No. Guards keep out whole leaves. They don't stop oak catkins, cedar elm leaves, spring pollen, or shingle granules, which either sift through a screen or mat on top of micro-mesh until water runs straight over the front. Guarded gutters still need the trough checked and the downspouts flushed. It's a lighter job, not a job that goes away. We clean and flush gutters. We don't sell or install guards.

My gutters overflow, but they look clean from the ground.

They probably are clean. The plug is usually sitting in the downspout outlet or the first elbow, and you can't see either one from the ground. The other common cause is pitch. A section that's lost its fall, or sagged between two hangers, holds water in the middle, and once that standing water is level with the front lip, everything after it goes over the edge.

Do you fix a gutter that's sagging or pulled away from the house?

No. We don't do gutter repair, replacement, or resealing. What we do is find the problem, photograph it, and tell you what's wrong. A hanger backed out of the fascia, a separated miter at a corner, a run pitched the wrong way. You can hand that to a gutter company instead of paying one to diagnose it. And cleaning a gutter that's hanging off the fascia is a waste of your money, so we'll say that too.
